My 8th grade reading class

My 8th grade reading class loved reading this book and stayed engaged with the story over the course of the quarter we read it. A few even sneaked the book from my room to read ahead! I'm doing it again this year and my new group is looking forward to the story!

If they created a set of interview questions, would we be able to present them on this website??

I loved Black Duck! You can

this book is an ok book but it needs a little more excitement

Where to begin? My son (14)

Where to begin?

My son (14) had just deposited Black Duck in the 'back to the library' pile when I just happened by. He went on to other things, but I picked up this book with the intriguing cover. Is that a lobster boat out in a late night storm? Black Duck. Sounds like a great name for a lobster boat....

Opening to the front flap and reading the blurb, I was hooked (kudos to your cover designer)but I'm still turning the book itself over in my hands.

"What is this book?"

For some indescribable reason I knew this was an important book for me. After the end of a page- turning read, I held it in my hands again and savored the feel of it- not the book itself this time, but the story, with all its simple telling, and all its layers of complexity.

I'm 58, a life long lover of good literature, that is, meaningful stories that take you deeper than life itself mostly does- certainly the 'life' that is bound by multiple barriers that entrap most conversation in glib inanity. One who is willing to face the darkness- and still proclaim the light hidden in unsuspected places, when it seems crushed by the evil of a darkening world- when it appears in unsuspected places- is my kind of story teller. The majority flee in fear.

I will look up the other books soon with anticipation.

I loved the book! Except for

I loved the book! Except for one part. The end. I feel that you left us hanging when Ruben's wife got home. But besides that i LOVED the book!!

THE BOOK WAS

THE BOOK WAS AWESOME..............EXCEPT
I think the auther did not sum it all up. What does Ruben mean when he says,"Well if you don't already know, I won't tell you."What does that mean? Does he mean they got married or she died or what. And plus, where was David getting all of these newspaper articles from? Because I looked all over the internet and there's no information. Other than that, I thought that the book was great, awesome, I couldn't put it down.

I think it was really smart how they used a half fifty dollar as a ticket for the rum dump. I got really mad when that guy killed Viola. I dont like him at all.

Re: Black Duck

What a wonderful novel. I agree with everyone who says it would make a nice movie and i would like Steven Speelburg to take this task. It would take all the Oscars for sure.

There are a lot of sites out there showing book video. BookVideoTV, BookTelevision and of course CSPAN, but I like how BN.com and Reader's Entertainment TV have specific genre channels and original shows. There's just more to see and I can be specific in what genre I'm interested in. Anyone else watch online tv? Reader's Entertainment

book review

Even though Black Duck is recommended for 7th grade and up, my sixth grade students had lots of praise for it. Even nonreaders couldn't stop reading it. A few skeptical students also ended up enjoying the well laid out mystery told in a unique interview format. The students also enjoyed researching their choice of a variety of related topics: Prohibition, Women's Suffrage, the Great Depression, Roaring Twenties, Politics, Rhode Island, the East Coast, smuggling, rum-running, bootlegging, gangs, gangsters, and the real Black Duck. Now we are all waiting for the Black Duck movie.

The Black Duck would make a great movie

I read the book the "Black Duck" the other day and it was so good that I wished the story would never end.

um..well of course it focused too much on the story. what else? would it talk about dancing flowers in a meadow?

Black Duck

The book was good. The only thing i would change is the beginning because it is kinda boaring like all books. But for the most part it was a good book

Good Book

I thought this book was really good. I'm usually not a fan of history books but this one was interesting and written really well!

good book

good book

AY BUDDAY

I liked this book. This book gave me great visions of the prohibition life of the 1920's. The way the rum-runners of back then was like amazing to learn about and you could easily relate them to hustlers of todays world which yeah is bad but is also an interesting subject to learn about.

Black Duck

This book was very exciting. It was full of ation in the water and out on land.Good work on the book.

Black Duck

The Black Duck surprised me and it was better than I had thought going into reading it. The first interview and first few chapters dragged on a bit, but after that it was really interesting and hard to put down.

As far as the happenings in the storyline, I was happy that Ruben and Marina got together, but I wished Billy Brady hadn't died. Also, I wanted Jeddy and Ruben to be friends again. The part where Ruben was kidnapped was one of the most suspenseful and best parts of the book.

Great book

this book was well writen and kept me interested during the whole story. The whole book made me feel like i was really there and the events were described in a great way. I also really liked the fact that the black duck was a real boat which made me want to read never put the book down.Overall the book was great keep writing more books like the black duck.

Four stars ****

Pretty good actually, well, for a school book. Best school required book I've read since...for awhile. The book got you thinking and there was a little suspense. I really liked each character's personality traits and how there was betrayal in the book. Those kinds of things make you want to read more. But of course, you had to end it with a cliffy, though I think Marina and Ruben married each other? Since the book said that Marina made the best clam chowder and in the future Ruben on the phone said that he would eat the clam chowder. So...yeah. But great book, keep on writing.

This was a very interesting

This was a very interesting book and is filled with suspence. I liked it a lot.

heyy dudee .

I thought that the book was very well written and the way that you organized the events that occurred was very well thought out and kept me interested . Toward the middle of the book I just wanted to keep reading to know what was happening to Ruben and stuff . The only thing I would have changed would be that maybe Ruben and Jeddy would have become friends again or atleast were on good terms with eachother . Great book, keep writing, dudee !

Extreamly Good Book

I read this book for history class while learning about the prohibition era and I found the book very enjoyable. It got so good in the middle i couldn't put it down and ended up reading about 100 pages in one night.

I liked it

I kind of liked the black Duck. Most of it was boring but, some was interesting.

The Duck

The Black Duck was an overall good book. Lisle uses an entertaining was to talk about the time of prohibition. The end was really good because there was a lot of action and it made me want to read more of the book. However I really couldn't get into the book at first because the beginning was a bit boring. It took a while to get into but once i did it was good.

Reading your book....

I really liked reading your fictionalized tale of the Black Duck and enjoyed learning about the Prohibition Act from anothers point of view.

LOVED IT.......

I really enjoyed the book if i could i would read it over again.....

Black Duck

I really enjoyed reading this book. While reading it I could picture everything that was happening. I learned about prohibition while reading. The only thing was that I didn't like the ending because I wanted to know more about Ruben and what happened after the whole thing.

Awesome Book

This book was very well written, and i enjoyed it very much. It taught me about prohibition while telling an interesting story as well.

review

i think the book wasn't that good.
the beginning of the book was way to slow, and i didn't feel like it focused on the prohibition enough. it mostly focused on the interview (which was the point of the story) but it focused to much on the story, and not enough on the history.

My Great Uncle was the Skipper of the Black Duck...

As the great nephew of the actual skipper of the infamous Black Duck, I read with great interest your fictionalization of this historic event.

Many times have I sat in my great uncles house and listened to the "true story" of what happened that night and I have to give you two thumbs up, Ms Lisle, you did an exceptionally good job of relating the story of the Black Duck!

Thank you for not only writing a riveting story about the dangers of what is now considered a harmlessly romantic era of American history, but also clearly laying out the truth about what the 'Ducks crewman were really like and what actually happened that fateful evening.

This was not an easy task, but you have done it well. I applaud you.

(For those readers who would like my personal account of my interviews with my great uncle, you can find it here...)
